It all started with a »beep«: On the 26th of June 1974, an employee at Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio, in the United States, pulled a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum, which had a UPC barcode on it, over the scanning window of a Datalogic Model A barcode scanner. Datalogic made history with this: The beep that the Datalogic barcode scanner produced at that time confirmed the very first commercial barcode scan and heralded the beginning of the automatic data capture industry.
